Pūrangiaho

Perched 415 meters above sea level on Wellington south coast, this thoughtfully designed 190 square meter home commands sweeping views across the Cook Strait while offering a refined balance of comfort, resilience and environmental sensitivity. Purpose-built to to withstand the region's dramatic weather conditions, this home is as much a shelter as it is a statement in understated, sustainable living.

The project named Pūrangiaho means “to see clearly” or "to understand” in reflection of Ben & Lauren’s clear and steady vision. Committed to stepping away from the city life, they set out to create a low-impact, future-focused home to serve their family needs and harmonise with the wild landscape.

A central aim for this home was to create a sense of familiarity — a lived-in feel where everything feels considered and effortlessly placed. At the core is the kitchen and lounge: a welcoming, comfortable hub designed for both connection and quiet retreat.

Framed by expansive windows overlooking the Cook Strait, this space is anchored by a roaring fire and ever-changing coastal views. Whether watching ferries glide past or weather sweep in from the south, this room offers a sense of calm and rhythm — a dynamic space that feels grounded, inviting, and deeply connected to its surroundings.

Each piece of joinery assembled by our skilled team has been made to suit the spaces and aesthetic of this home. Hand-sanded and oiled, the custom joinery is a testament to the level of craftsmanship and quality that delivers durability, warmth and character to this home.

This includes everything from bespoke wardrobes and display shelving to integrated bedheads, vanities, desks and our signature fold-out bed - all tailored to fit the personality of the home and reflect Ben & Lauren's vision. This level of detail is only achievable thanks to our in-house joinery factory - a distinctive feature that sets INLINE apart as Wellington’s only fully integrated design & build company. It is the key that ensures this home feels cohesive and personal from the moment you step inside.

With the use of warm cedar timber in the sheltered areas, the home's primary cladding - ColorSteel Matte Flaxpod - was carefully selected for its durability and low reflective finish, allowing the structure to settle into this exposed setting.

On a site where wind gusts have been recorded at up to 250km/ph, materials and construction methods needed to meet exceptional standards. INLINE worked closely with product manufacturers to custom-design details that could confidently withstand the region’s harshest weather conditions.

The success of this project is a true reflection of both the resilience and vision of Ben and Lauren, as well as the unwavering commitment of our team - showing up day after day and tackling challenges head on with sheer determination and skill in every part of the build.
